Overview

Kyushu, Japan’s southernmost main island, is rich in hot springs, history, and natural beauty. Beppu and Yufuin are famous for their onsen, while Kurokawa Onsen offers rustic mountain retreats. In Kagoshima, views of the active Sakurajima volcano pair with samurai heritage and gardens like Sengan-en.

The region is also deeply historical. Nagasaki reflects Japan’s international past through Dejima, Oura Church, and Glover Garden, as well as solemn sites like the Atomic Bomb Museum. Kumamoto Castle stands as one of Japan’s great fortresses, while Saga’s Okawachiyama and Arita showcase traditional ceramics.

Food is another highlight, from Fukuoka’s lively yatai stalls and tonkotsu ramen to Nagasaki’s castella cake and unique champon noodles. Scenic spots like Yakushima’s mossy forests and waterfalls, plus cultural treasures such as Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, round out the island’s appeal.

Kyushu offers a balance of tradition, nature, and warm hospitality, making it one of Japan’s most rewarding regions to explore.
