Overview

Kagoshima Prefecture sits at the southern tip of Kyushu, known for its active volcanoes, peaceful hot springs, and strong samurai history. The most famous landmark is Sakurajima, a smoking volcano right across the bay from Kagoshima City. You can watch steam rise while soaking in an onsen or walking along the lava trails.

Nearby, the scenic Sengan-en Garden offers sea views and a look into a former feudal lord’s villa. History fans can visit the museum at the site of the Meiji Restoration, which began here. Food lovers should try kurobuta pork or sweet potato shochu.

For something more remote, take a ferry to Yakushima, a lush island with ancient cedar trees and a UNESCO World Heritage forest that inspired Princess Mononoke.
