Shiroyama Hotel in Kagoshima is known for its striking views of Sakurajima, attentive service, and a breakfast spread that many say is the best in town.

The Shiroyama Hotel 城山ホテル鹿児島 stands as a large, modern brick hotel with balconies and several floors, offering guests a room with a view in Kagoshima’s hilltop retreat against a blue sky. Cars and decorative brick structures adorn the entrance.

Why Stay at Shiroyama Hotel

Perched on the top of Shiroyama, the forested hill rising behind central Kagoshima, Shiroyama Hotel is a favorite among locals and travelers alike.

With wide-open views of Sakurajima, welcoming spaces, and consistently great service, it’s easy to see why. After returning from Yakushima, we couldn’t have asked for a better place to unwind.

Panoramic Sunset Views

Sunrise over a cityscape with a distant volcano, partially veiled by clouds, rising behind the buildings—just the view from Shiroyama Hotel 城山ホテル鹿児島, Kagoshima’s hilltop retreat. Trees frame the scene as warm light bathes the peaceful morning.

From our room, the west-facing view stretched over Kagoshima City with Sakurajima rising on the horizon. One of the most memorable moments was watching the sun glow across the bay as it rose—such a peaceful way to start the day! And even if you don’t book a Sakurajima-facing room, the hotel’s terraces and lounges offer plenty of cozy spots to take in the scenery.

Kaiseki Dinner

A beautifully arranged Japanese appetizer platter with assorted items, served on a glass tray with a green leaf underneath—just one of the elegant culinary experiences at Shiroyama Hotel 城山ホテル鹿児島: A Room with a View in Kagoshima’s Hilltop Retreat.

We tried a dinner plan that featured kaiseki, the traditional multi-course meal. The presentation was beautiful, though the flavors didn’t quite match the level we were hoping for. That said, it was nice to relax and dine on-site after a long day of travel rather than heading back into town.

Exceptional Breakfast

Breakfast at Shiroyama Hotel really lived up to its reputation. With more than 50 different dishes to choose from, it was easily one of the best buffets we’ve had in Japan. The spread was full of delicious options, but the Satsuma-age (fried fish cakes) and shochu-marinated pork left the biggest impression, each tasting wonderfully fresh.

Our Room Experience at Shiroyama Hotel

A hotel room at Shiroyama Hotel 城山ホテル鹿児島 with four neatly made single beds, a desk and chair by large windows offering a view from Kagoshima’s hilltop retreat, plus an armchair, small table, lamp, and framed painting on the wall.

Our room was cozy and comfortable, even if the décor felt a bit dated. What really made it special, though, was the view—seeing the city lights twinkle below with Sakurajima rising in the distance made the stay unforgettable.

Local-Speak: What Does “Satsuma” Mean?

Throughout Kagoshima you’ll see the word “Satsuma.” It refers to the former Satsuma Domain, ruled by the Shimazu clan during Japan’s feudal era. Today, the name remains tied to regional specialties such as Satsuma beef, Satsuma ware, and Satsuma-age, symbolizing local pride and tradition.
