Known for its Kagoshima specialties, Kumasotei serves wagyu, kurobuta pork, and fresh seafood in set meals that highlight the city’s rich food culture.

A Delicious Start at Kumasotei
When we first arrived in Kagoshima, one of the things we were most excited about was the food. This southern Kyushu city is famous for its high-quality meats like Kagoshima wagyu beef, kurobuta pork, and jidori chicken. Thanks to its coastal location, the city is also a great place to enjoy eel and other seafood.
For our first meal, we headed straight to Kumasotei, a well-known restaurant in the city center that specializes in Satsuma cuisine. The restaurant has a welcoming, slightly retro feel with tatami seating and warm hospitality. It turned out to be the perfect place for an introduction to Kagoshima flavors.
What We Ate

Kumasotei’s menu is like a sampler of the region’s specialties. We ordered a lunch course set that included several memorable dishes:
- Kibinago sashimi: These silver-stripe round herrings were beautifully plated and served raw. Our kids were hesitant at first, but dipping them in ponzu sauce made them super tasty.
- Chicken tataki: A Kagoshima favorite, this lightly seared chicken was served nearly raw. It was tender, flavorful, and refreshing.
- Kurobuta shabu shabu: Thin slices of the area’s famous pork were swished in hot broth and dipped in sesame or citrus sauce. This was a standout dish for all of us.
- Satsuma-age: Handmade deep-fried fish cakes, crispy outside and soft inside. Simple but very satisfying.
- Tonkotsu: Kagoshima’s version of braised pork belly, simmered in a savory-sweet broth until melt-in-your-mouth tender.

The mixture of raw, seared, fried, and slow-stewed dishes gave us a full taste of Kagoshima’s food culture. Each plate was presented with care, and the portions were just right for lunch.
Price and Value

Lunch sets range from ¥2,200 ¥4,400 per person, which feels very reasonable for the quality and variety. While there are a la carte choices, we recommend the set course as the best way to try a range of local specialties in one meal.
