Traveling between Yakushima and Kagoshima on the Toppy and Rocket ferries is one of the fastest and most comfortable ways to cross the sea, with smooth rides and scenic views.

What Are the Toppy & Rocket Hydrofoils?

The Toppy and Rocket are high-speed hydrofoil ferries operated by JR Kyushu Jet Ferry. These sleek vessels “fly” just above the water using hydrofoil technology, lifting partially out of the sea to reduce drag and create a smoother ride. Onboard, it feels more like riding a bullet train than a boat, which is especially welcome on windy days.

Sailings connect Kagoshima Port with Yakushima’s two main ports, Miyanoura and Anbo. Some routes also stop at Tanegashima.

Why We Loved the Hydrofoil Ride

  • Smooth ride: Even with rough seas, the hydrofoil stayed steady without the rolling motion of standard ferries.
  • Family fun: Our kids loved it! The ride felt futuristic, and the large windows gave them a front-row seat to the waves rushing by.
  • Scenic farewell: Departing Yakushima by sea let us admire its mountains one last time as they rose dramatically from the coast.

Terminal Information

  • Yakushima: Departures are from either Miyanoura Port or Anbo Port. Always check your ticket for the correct terminal.
  • Kagoshima: Hydrofoils leave from the Kagoshima Port South Pier Terminal, separate from the conventional ferry terminal.

Both terminals are well-marked, and boarding is straightforward. We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes early, especially during peak seasons.

Practical Tips

A yellow box with illustrations and Japanese text contains two types of individually wrapped baked goods, labeled Man’s Kitchen, featuring Toppy & Rocket, placed on an airplane tray table.
  • Motion sickness: These ferries are a great option if you’re prone to seasickness—the ride is steady.
  • Food: There’s no meal service onboard. Bring your own snacks.

How to Get to Yakushima Toppy & Rocket Terminal

From Yakushima (Miyanoura Port)

Reach the terminal by taxi, rental car, or local bus. Most hotels in Miyanoura are a short ride away.

From Yakushima (Anbo Port)

Anbo serves some sailings. Confirm your departure port when booking.

  • Bus: Local buses run to Anbo Port from major areas on the island.
  • Taxi: Taxis are available around Anbo’s town center and accommodations.

At the Terminal

  • Boarding: Arrive at least 30 minutes early. Follow staff instructions for seat lines.
  • Luggage: Place large bags on the rack near the entrance. Keep valuables with you.

Pro Tip: In busy seasons, book ahead and double check your port. Some sailings use Miyanoura, others use Anbo.

Is the Toppy/Rocket Hydrofoil Worth Taking?

The Toppy and Rocket ferries are one of the fastest and most comfortable ways to reach or leave Yakushima. They’re ideal for anyone who prefers a smoother ride over open water.

If your schedule allows, we suggest flying one way and taking the ferry the other, so you can enjoy both views from the air and the sea.
