Perched on Yakushima’s rugged coastline, Hirauchi Kaichu Natural Onsen offers a rare chance to soak in hot springs that appear only at low tide, with waves crashing just meters away.

Why Yakushima Feels So Unique
Yakushima is one of Japan’s most remarkable islands, with ancient cedar forests, waterfalls, and dramatic coastlines that look like they belong in a fantasy film. In fact, its mossy woods inspired parts of Princess Mononoke. Beyond its forests, the island also hides unusual coastal hot springs that connect you directly with nature.
One of the most famous is Hirauchi Kaichu Natural Onsen, where volcanic hot water bubbles up right at the edge of the sea. Timing your visit with the tides is part of the adventure.
Visiting Hirauchi Kaichu Natural Onsen

We planned our stop here at the start of our trip, combining it with a visit to nearby Ohko Waterfall. It was the perfect introduction to Yakushima’s mix of wild landscapes and soothing hot springs.
The Setting
The onsen sits on the southwest coast, surrounded by rugged volcanic rock. Pools form naturally along the shoreline, warmed by underground geothermal heat. Just beyond, waves crash against the rocks, reminding you that this is no ordinary hot spring.
Tide Timing Is Everything
The baths are only exposed for a few hours around low tide. Outside of this window, they vanish beneath the sea. We checked tide charts at our rental car counter before driving out, which made planning simple.
What to Expect
- Clothing & Etiquette: Bathing suits aren’t allowed. This is a mixed-gender onsen, so nudity is required, in line with Japanese custom.
- Facilities: There are no changing rooms. Wear clothes that are easy to slip off and bring a small towel.
- Rinse Before Bathing: A basic spigot is available near the pools.
- Fee: There’s no staff, but a donation box requests ¥200 per person. Bring coins.
How to Get to Hirauchi Kaichu Natural Onsen
By Car
- From Anbo: Route 77 south then Route 78. About 40 minutes.
- From Miyanoura: Route 58 to Route 77 then Route 78. About 60 to 70 minutes.
- Look for roadside parking signed “平内海中温泉”. Walk down the short path to the rocks.
Navigation Tips
- Time your visit for roughly two hours before and after low tide.
- Bring coins for the ¥200 donation box at the entrance.
- No changing rooms on site. Wear layers and carry a small towel.
Pro Tip: If the tide is not right when you arrive, visit Ohko Waterfall first, then return for the next low tide window.
Is Hirauchi Kaichu Onsen Worth Visiting?
If you’re comfortable with traditional onsen customs, this is one of Yakushima’s most memorable experiences. Few places in Japan let you soak in a natural hot spring while waves crash nearby. More than just a bath, it’s one of those moments where you feel completely connected to nature.
