Overview

Kumamoto City in Kyushu is where ancient history and modern city life meet. It’s most famous for Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s best-preserved castles, known for its massive stone walls and sweeping views. Just steps away is Sakuranobaba Josaien, a charming castle town area with shops, restaurants, and hands-on cultural exhibits.

The city is surrounded by beautiful mountains and rivers, offering nature escapes like Suizenji Jojuen Garden and easy access to nearby Mt. Aso, one of the largest active volcanoes in the world. Downtown, visitors can enjoy lively shopping arcades and cozy izakaya (Japanese pubs) that serve up local specialties like horse sashimi and mustard lotus root.
