The sprawling Ocean Expo Park in northern Okinawa brings together marine science, rich Ryukyuan culture, and plenty of family-friendly activities—all in one spot you can easily spend a full day exploring.

A Full Day of Nature, Culture, and Sea Life
If you’re planning a trip to Okinawa with kids, Okinawa Ocean Expo Park (Kaiyohaku Koen) should be high on your list. Located along the scenic northwest coast in Motobu, this sprawling park is a mix of marine science, botanical gardens, and cultural heritage.
What made the park so enjoyable was how smoothly everything was laid out. It’s stroller-friendly, clean, and filled with attractions for all ages. From dolphin shows to traditional Okinawan homes, the park delivers an experience that’s both educational and fun.
What Makes Ocean Expo Park Unique

Built on the site of the 1975 Okinawa International Ocean Expo, the park was designed to celebrate and preserve oceanic culture. We appreciated how well it balances learning and play.
* If you visit with kids, plan for at least half a day there. Keep in mind that it takes almost one hour to drive from Naha to the park.
Ocean Expo Park Areas and Highlights
Here’s a quick guide to Ocean Expo Park to help you plan:
- Churaumi Aquarium One of the most famous aquariums in Japan, home to whale sharks and manta rays (covered in a separate post).
- Native Okinawan Village & Omoro Arboretum A peaceful, open-air museum with reconstructed Ryukyuan homes and gardens showcasing native plants.
- Oceanic Culture Museum & Planetarium A small but engaging museum with exhibits on maritime life and a planetarium.
- Emerald Beach A clean, calm beach with turquoise water and soft white sand.
- Tropical & Subtropical Arboretum A shaded walking path through Okinawa’s lush plant life.
Tip: The park is large, and it can take more than 30 minutes to walk from the aquarium to the southern arboretum. If you have young children, consider bringing or renting a stroller.
Our Favorite Family Experiences

Okichan Theater – Dolphin Show
This was the biggest highlight for our kids. The dolphins were playful and energetic, and the open-air theater had an unbeatable ocean backdrop.
Emerald Beach
Just a short walk from the aquarium, Emerald Beach offers clear, calm water and soft sand. Swimming is allowed from April to October, but we enjoyed relaxing here even in the off-season.
Sea Turtle Pool
Located in a quieter part of the park, this pool holds several sea turtle species. You can view them from above or through underwater glass windows.
Kids Adventure Land
Near the aquarium entrance is an open-air playground filled with climbing nets, tunnels, and obstacle courses. It’s a great stop for kids who need to run around and burn off some energy.
Native Okinawan Village
We wandered through eight recreated Ryukyuan homes and discovered what daily life was like in Okinawa’s past.
How to Get to Okinawa Ocean Expo Park
Bus
- From Central Naha, look for one of the express bus services such as the Okinawa Airport Shuttle, the Yanbaru Express Bus, or Bus line 117. Ride the bus to the Kinen Kōen-mae (記念公園前) bus stop, which is the main stop for the Ocean Expo Park.
- Total travel time: ~2 hours.
Car
- From Central Naha Airport, it takes about 1.5 – 2 hours by car.
Pro Tip: If you’re not renting a car, consider staying overnight in Motobu to avoid a long return trip the same day.
