A Peaceful Retreat in Kyoto’s Western Hills

Arashiyama is one of our favorite places in Kyoto. Located on the city’s western side, this historic district blends natural beauty, cultural treasures, and family-friendly adventures all in one scenic area.

As we entered the signature bamboo grove, it feels like we’re in a different world. The green stalks reached high above us, swaying gently and making sounds in the breeze. The sound of the wind through the bamboo is so calming it’s officially recognized as one of Japan’s “100 Soundscapes.”

For us, Arashiyama always feels like a little escape within the city—and we think you’ll love it too.

Explore Arashiyama’s Main Street

The Yojiya Cafe exterior in Sagano Arashiyama, Kyoto, Japan, showcases a traditional-style building paired with a modern glass storefront and the signature Yojiya Cafe sign featuring its stylized face logo.

Before heading into the forest, we strolled along the main shopping street, just steps from the station. It’s filled with teahouses, souvenir shops, and delicious snacks.

Don’t Miss:

  • Handmade Souvenirs: From washi paper to locally made ceramics and lucky charms.
  • Yojiya Oil Blotting Paper (よーじや): A Kyoto beauty classic with iconic packaging.
  • Yatsuhashi (八ツ橋): Soft, chewy sweets in flavors like matcha, cinnamon, and black sesame. We enjoyed it so much that we recreated the recipe when we returned home.

Visit Temples Tucked Into the Hills

Arashiyama is also home to several temples worth exploring.

  • Jojakko-ji (常寂光寺): A serene Zen temple with hillside views and fiery foliage in fall.
  • Nison-in (二尊院): Known for its tree-lined approach and peaceful atmosphere.

These lesser-known spots offer a nice break from the crowds.

Walk Through the Bamboo Grove

A paved path winds through the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, with tall, green bamboo stalks arching overhead and sunlight filtering through the leaves.

The entrance to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is easy to find from the main street.

What Makes the Bamboo Grove Special:

  • Towering bamboo creates a tunnel-like path with shifting light and shadows.
  • The soft rustle of the stalks is relaxing and surreal.
  • It’s free to enter and easy to walk through, even with little kids.

Photo Tip: Arrive early morning for the best light and fewer people. The glow through the bamboo is pure magic. It gets very crowded later on in the day.

Sunset at Togetsukyo Bridge (渡月橋)

A scenic view of a river with a wide pebble shore, the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge, and houses nestled among trees, set against green mountains under a hazy sky with leafy branches framing the top.

If you’re there later on in the day, try to catch the sunset at Togetsukyo Bridge, one of Kyoto’s most scenic river crossings. The view of the mountains, especially in fall or spring, is stunning.

Ride the Sagano Romantic Train (嵯峨野観光鉄道)

If you have time for a short detour, hop aboard the Sagano Scenic Railway—a vintage-style train that winds through the Hozugawa River valley.

Ride Highlights:

  • 25-minute journey through tunnels and forests
  • Peak season: Autumn foliage (late October to late November)
  • Relaxing way to see the landscape without walking

Is Arashiyama Worth Visiting? Here’s Why We Think So

We highly recommend Arashiyama as a must for first-time visitors to Kyoto. The bamboo forest alone is unforgettable, but it’s the combination of nature, temples, riverside views, and peaceful walking paths that make this area so special.
