Enjoy refined Japanese confections at Toraya Tokyo Midtown, a serene space where centuries-old tradition meets seasonal desserts like kakigori and anmitsu.

What Is Toraya?
Toraya (とらや) is one of Japan’s most historic and respected wagashi (和菓子) makers, known for its elegant Japanese sweets that date back over 500 years. Founded in Kyoto during the early Edo period, Toraya began as a purveyor to the Imperial Court, and its reputation has lasted ever since.
Even today, Toraya is considered a national treasure in the world of Japanese confectionery. It specializes in anko (sweet red bean paste)–based desserts, all made with time-honored techniques and the finest ingredients. Each item reflects the brand’s devotion to harmony, balance, and seasonality, which are core values in wagashi philosophy.
Toraya has locations across Japan and even a boutique in Paris, but every shop keeps the focus on refined presentation and warm, traditional hospitality. We’ve also been to their Akasaka Main Store, which is beautifully decorated inside
Toraya Tokyo Midtown: Where History Meets Modern Design

After a morning exploring Tokyo Midtown’s museums and gardens, we found ourselves craving a little pause, and the B1 Galleria café and shop was just the spot. Tucked away from the hustle, it felt like stepping into a quiet haven in the middle of a busy day.
The space is simple yet inviting, with warm wood, soft lighting, and a calm, welcoming vibe. It reminded us more of a cozy tearoom than a café in a bustling shopping complex.
Even if wagashi is new to you, this café makes it easy and enjoyable to start. The staff are friendly and happy to explain the seasonal treats, and you can either sit down for a relaxed tasting or pick up beautifully boxed sweets to take home or gift.
Kakigori: A Cool and Elegant Summer Treat

It was a warm day, so we ordered two kakigori (shaved ice) desserts. Toraya’s version is delicate, airy, and beautifully presented. The ice has a snow-like texture and is shaved so finely that it melts instantly on the tongue.
We tried:
Matcha Kakigori – Topped with slightly bitter green tea syrup and a touch of sweetness. Clean, refreshing, and satisfying without being heavy.
Mango Kakigori – Made with real mango puree, it was juicy and smooth with a rich tropical flavor. A perfect choice for summer.
Each bowl came with a side of shiratama (chewy mochi rice balls), which added a subtle texture contrast. It’s not an overly sweet dessert, but one that leaves you feeling cool and refreshed.
Anmitsu: Tradition in Every Bite

We also shared anmitsu, a classic Japanese dessert made from cubes of agar jelly, anko, seasonal fruit, and kuromitsu (black sugar syrup). Some versions include a scoop of ice cream or soft mochi.
It was such a lovely way to recharge during a busy day of sightseeing in Tokyo. If you’re looking to explore more wagashi, here are a few other Japanese sweet cafes worth visiting in the city.
