Tokyo Midtown (東京ミッドタウン)
A sleek blend of art, shopping, design, and green space, Tokyo Midtown offers one of the most refined city experiences in Tokyo’s Roppongi district.

A City Within the City
What our family enjoys most about Tokyo Midtown is how complete it feels. With museums, stylish shops, tree-lined spaces, and restaurants all flowing together, it’s easy to forget you’re in a shopping complex, and it really feels like its own little neighborhood in Roppongi.
Designed for Daily Life and Inspiration

Tokyo Midtown opened in 2007 on the former site of Japan’s Defense Agency. The vision was to create a modern complex where people could work, live, shop, and relax. At its center stands Midtown Tower, which rises 248 meters and ranks among Tokyo’s tallest buildings.
The layout balances city energy with natural touches. Bamboo, glass, and stone are used throughout, and Midtown Garden offers a quiet escape beside Hinokicho Park. The complex is also part of the “Art Triangle Roppongi,” along with the nearby National Art Center and Mori Art Museum.
A Hidden Gem: Fujifilm Square

Before heading into the main Galleria, we visited Fujifilm Square at the base of the complex. The space includes a photography museum, camera gallery, and showroom. Our kids loved seeing vintage cameras and interactive photo displays. It’s an easy, free activity that adds something different to the typical mall visit.
What to Do at Tokyo Midtown

There’s something for everyone here. A few highlights:
Suntory Museum of Art
Focused on traditional Japanese arts, this museum features rotating exhibitions on ceramics, lacquerware, textiles, and tea culture.
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT
Founded by designer Issey Miyake, this minimalist space hosts exhibitions on design and everyday life. The building itself is part of the experience.
Tsutaya Books
This stylish bookstore includes art books, magazines, and a café. It’s a quiet spot to relax indoors, even on rainy days.
Sukiyabashi Jiro Roppongi
This Michelin-starred sushi restaurant is run by Takashi Ono, son of the legendary Jiro Ono. Reservations are essential for this omakase experience.
Shopping at Tokyo Midtown

While many shops lean high-end, Tokyo Midtown isn’t intimidating. It’s a great place to browse at your own pace.
Muji
A spacious store with home goods, snacks, clothing, and travel essentials.
Kayanoya
One of our favorite stops for food gifts. Their dashi, vinegars, and seasonings are beautifully packaged and high-quality.
Fruit Shops
Japan’s luxury fruit culture is on full display here. It’s fun to see perfectly shaped melons and peaches—even if we’re not buying.
You’ll also find fashion boutiques, Japanese design stores, and artisanal food counters.
Winter Illumination at Midtown Garden

If you’re visiting during the holiday season, don’t miss the Midtown Christmas illumination event held in Midtown Garden! From late November through December, the lawn area and trees are transformed with thousands of LED lights in glowing blue and white patterns. It’s one of our favorite illuminations in Tokyo during the holiday season.
