Overlooking Lake Chuzenji, Hoshino Resorts KAI Nikko invites you to slow down and savor the region’s charm through thoughtful hospitality, seasonal dining, and cultural encounters.

Travel Update: Please note that Hoshino Resorts KAI Nikko is currently closed for a long-term renovation (having closed on March 1, 2024, with plans to reopen). If you are looking for a high-end stay in the area right now, consider checking out The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko or the Chuzenji Kanaya Hotel nearby!
Why We Chose to Stay at KAI Nikko
After a full day of chasing waterfalls and exploring Nikko’s natural beauty, we wanted a special place to unwind. While we don’t often splurge on luxury ryokans, KAI Nikko felt like the right choice for us, and here’s why:
- Reputation: Hoshino Resorts properties are known for their elegance and service.
- Convenience: Around Lake Chuzenji, high-end accommodations are limited, and this one felt like a rare find.
- Scenery: We dreamed of waking up to sweeping lake views from our room and enjoying the mountains from the shared spaces.
Although the ryokan isn’t right on the water’s edge, the lake and mountain views were still beautiful, especially from the dining hall and lobby, where the changing light over the lake made every meal feel extra special.
A Warm Welcome

The moment we arrived, the staff greeted us at the entrance and whisked away our luggage. Their attentiveness made us feel instantly cared for. This kind of hospitality is common at ryokans, but the staff here set a high bar.
Spacious and Comfortable Rooms

Our room was much larger than we expected for a Japanese ryokan. It included:
- A main bedroom with twin beds
- A tatami sitting area
- A second sitting room converted into a futon space for the kids
- A private wooden soaking tub
The room was spotless, quiet, and thoughtfully designed.
Dining at KAI Nikko

Meals were served in a serene dining hall reached through a glass corridor overlooking a stone garden. Both dinner and breakfast were a highlight of our stay.
Dinner was a beautifully plated multi-course kaiseki meal. Each dish showcased seasonal ingredients and was served on carefully selected tableware reflecting local craftsmanship.
The children’s menu was another pleasant surprise. Instead of the usual hamburg steak or omelet, our kids were treated to clear fish soup, ikura, and other refined dishes prepared just for them.
A Cultural Evening: The Nikko Geta Dance

After dinner, we joined other guests for a cultural performance in the lounge. The Nikko Geta Dance, performed with unique wooden sandals dating back over 400 years, was explained and then demonstrated by staff. The rhythmic clapping of the geta on the floor was both educational and entertaining, ending the evening on a memorable note.
