Overview

A lively mix of old traditions and modern life, Asakusa in Tokyo’s Taito ward is where the past and present come together. It’s best known for Sensoji Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. Nearby, you’ll find the famous Kaminarimon Gate with its big red lantern and Nakamise-dori, a busy shopping street filled with traditional snacks, souvenirs, and sweet treats.

You can say a prayer at the temple, ride in a rickshaw, and check out shops that sell everything from samurai swords to wooden geta sandals. For a quiet walk, head to the Nishi-Sando promenade, or stop by the Asakusa Culture Tourist Center for amazing views of the city.

Asakusa is a special place where you can enjoy Tokyo’s history with a warm ningyo-yaki cake or a soft, sweet baked potato in hand.
