The Irohazaka mountain road leads to Akechidaira Plateau, where panoramic views of Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Falls make this one of Nikko’s most unforgettable stops.

Driving the Irohazaka Road

Nikko is full of dramatic landscapes, but few compare to the winding Irohazaka road. This famous set of mountain switchbacks connects the lower town of Nikko with the higher elevations of Lake Chuzenji and Okunikko.

The road gets its name from the 48 syllables of the old Japanese alphabet, with each curve once marked by a character. Today, there are two separate one-way roads—one for uphill traffic and one for downhill. With dozens of tight turns, the drive is thrilling in any season, but it is especially famous in autumn when the slopes glow with fiery colors.

Akechidaira Plateau – The Best View in Nikko

A winding mountain road curves through the lush green hills of Nikko Akechidaira Plateau, surrounded by dense trees with layers of mountains fading into the cloudy sky in the background.

About halfway up Irohazaka, we stopped at Akechidaira Plateau, home to one of Nikko’s best observation points. From the parking area, we boarded the Akechidaira Ropeway, a three-minute cable car ride to the viewing platform.

The panoramic view from the top was stunning. We could see:

  • Lake Chuzenji stretching out to the west
  • Kegon Falls plunging dramatically from the lake into the gorge below
  • The Nikko valley unfolding behind us with its layered mountains

On a clear day, this perspective is unforgettable and well worth the ropeway fee.

Scenic Highlights Along the Route

Two children stand smiling at a scenic Nikko Akechidaira Plateau viewpoint with lush green hills, a distant waterfall, and a lake under a cloudy sky. A viewing scope is beside them.

Driving up Irohazaka is more than just a way to reach Lake Chuzenji—it’s an experience in itself.

  • The drive: Full of sharp curves, it’s exciting but manageable if you take it slow.
  • Kurokamidaira Viewpoint: Before reaching Akechidaira, this lookout gave us a sweeping view of the Nikko basin.
  • Seasonal scenery: Lush greens in summer, bright foliage in autumn, and a quiet, snow-dusted road in winter each make the route feel different.

One thing to keep in mind: during peak fall foliage, traffic can be heavy. A drive that normally takes 30 minutes may stretch to two hours or more. We recommend going early in the morning to avoid congestion.

How to Get to Akechidaira Plateau (明智平)

By Train and Bus

From Tobu Nikko Station or JR Nikko Station, take a Tobu bus bound for Chuzenji Onsen (中禅寺温泉) or Yumoto Onsen (湯元温泉). Get off at the Akechidaira (明智平) stop. The ride takes about 35–40 minutes. The ropeway station is next to the stop.

By Car

From central Nikko, drive up Irohazaka (いろは坂) toward Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖). Follow signs for Akechidaira. Paid parking is available by the ropeway. Expect heavy traffic in peak autumn.

Pro Tip: Check ropeway status before you go, since wind or fog can cause sudden suspensions—arrive early during the fall season.

Akechidaira Plateau offers one of the most spectacular views in Nikko, combining Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and the surrounding mountains in one sweeping panorama. The drive up Irohazaka is memorable on its own, but the ropeway viewpoint makes it even more rewarding. If you’re exploring Nikko, this stop should be on your itinerary.
