A Museum That Turns Ramen Into an Adventure

The Cup Noodles Museum in Yokohama celebrates one of Japan’s most famous food inventions. Located in the Minato Mirai district, it’s dedicated to Momofuku Ando, the man behind Cup Noodles.

When we visited, we weren’t sure what to expect. By the end, we were entertained and inspired. The museum mixes history, creativity, and fun in a way that appeals to both kids and adults.

The Story of Momofuku Ando

A cozy vintage kitchen with wooden walls, old-fashioned cookware, a pasta machine, pots, jars, and mugs evokes the nostalgic charm of the Cup Noodles Museum, warmly lit by a lamp with a radio and fan on the shelf.

Momofuku Ando invented Chicken Ramen in 1958, working out of a small backyard shed. He believed food should be simple, affordable, and capable of feeding people everywhere. In 1971, he launched Cup Noodles, an idea that revolutionized how the world eats.

His philosophy is summed up in one line: “Peace will come to the world when there is enough food.” The museum captures this vision through exhibits and hands-on experiences.

What to See and Do

A large, modern, cubic brick building with ECQUI MUSEUM written at the entrance stands at a city intersection—reminiscent of the iconic Cup Noodles Museum—with pedestrians, cars, and trees nearby on a clear day.

We started our visit with a short film about the origins of instant noodles. It set the stage for understanding Ando’s impact on global food culture.

A full-scale replica of Ando’s shed shows where it all began. Seeing the modest tools he used reminded us how creativity often grows out of the simplest spaces.

A crowded indoor space at the Cup Noodles Museum with many people sitting at tables and eating, while others line up at a counter labeled My Cup Noodles. The atmosphere is busy and lively.

For ¥500, you design your cup, choose one of four soups, and add four toppings. With thousands of possible combinations, it’s a fun way to create a personalized souvenir. When we visited during the holiday, all the slots were sold out since early morning, so we missed our opportunity.
