Step back in time at Jiyuken, Osaka’s first yoshoku restaurant, and taste its signature mixed curry rice with raw egg inside the retro food hall of Tempozan Marketplace.

A plate of Japanese curry rice at Osaka Tempozan Marketplace is topped with a raw egg yolk, hamburger patty, fried shrimp, and croquette with ketchup, served alongside shredded cabbage. A glass of Coca-Cola, water, and utensils sit on the wooden table.

What Is Jiyuken?

Founded in 1903, Jiyuken is recognized as Osaka’s first Western-style (yoshoku) restaurant. The original branch still welcomes diners in Namba, while the Tempozan Marketplace location carries on the tradition, serving the same signature curry that has defined Jiyuken for over a century.

What Makes Jiyuken’s Curry Unique

A white plate of rice topped with a rich red sauce, peas, corn, and a raw egg yolk is served at Jiyuken Restaurant Tempozan on a wooden table with a spoon and napkin nearby.

Instead of serving curry sauce alongside rice, Jiyuken mixes the two together before plating. A raw egg is placed on top, ready to be stirred in just before eating. The curry itself is simple yet full of character, made with minced beef and onions in a savory, slightly spicy sauce. Unlike many chain-style Japanese curries, this one leans richer, with a touch of heat.

We ordered the classic curry rice, and the egg blended smoothly into the hot dish, giving it a silky texture. It was hearty but not too heavy—an ideal break from Osaka’s street food stalls.

Meals are served quickly, making it a convenient stop before or after the aquarium, Legoland, or the Tempozan Ferris Wheel.

Where You’ll Find Jiyuken: Naniwa Kuishinbo Yokocho (なにわ食いしんぼ横丁)

A cozy Japanese restaurant entrance, Jiyuken Restaurant Tempozan, with colorful curry menus and posters outside; people are dining inside, visible through an open doorway with traditional curtains.

Jiyuken is tucked inside Naniwa Kuishinbo Yokocho, a food court designed to resemble a 1960s Osaka street. Paper lanterns, nostalgic music, and old-style shopfronts create the atmosphere of a Showa-era neighborhood.

The alley features more than 20 eateries, each highlighting Osaka’s food culture:

  • Aiduya – credited as the inventor of takoyaki
  • Hokkyokusei – birthplace of omurice
  • Momodani Ikayakiya – known for Osaka-style squid pancakes

It feels like walking through a living food museum, where history and flavor go hand in hand.

Japan offers countless styles of curry, but Jiyuken’s version stands apart. Their mixed curry is simple yet deeply satisfying, unlike any other we’ve tried.

Conveniently located inside Tempozan Marketplace, it’s a great stop while exploring the harbor area and a chance to taste a dish that has been part of Osaka’s food culture for more than a century.
