Yamashita Park is one of Yokohama’s most iconic waterfront spots, where flower beds, historic ships, and open harbor views create a refreshing escape.

A Seaside Escape in Yokohama
After a busy day exploring Chinatown, Motomachi, or downtown Yokohama, we love slowing down at Yamashita Park. Opened in 1930, the park was built on reclaimed land using rubble from the Great Kanto Earthquake. Now it stretches along the bay with wide paths, seasonal gardens, and landmarks that celebrate Yokohama’s international past.
We enjoyed strolling past street performers entertaining the crowds, and families watching ships sail into the harbor. The Rose Garden was in full bloom during our visit and quickly became one of our favorite corners of the park.
Hikawa Maru – Yokohama’s Floating Museum

One of the park’s highlights is the Hikawa Maru, a luxury ocean liner turned museum. Built in 1930, this elegant ocean liner once ferried passengers between Japan and Seattle, earning the nickname “Queen of the Pacific.” After more than 250 crossings—and even a stint as a hospital ship during World War II—it now survives as the only pre-war Japanese passenger liner still afloat.
Stepping on board felt like traveling back in time. We explored the first-class lounges, dining rooms, and engine rooms, all carefully restored with authentic 1930s details. The retro furniture and polished wood made it easy to imagine the glamour of crossing the Pacific nearly a century ago.
Gardens, Monuments, and Bay Views

The park’s paths connect scenic viewpoints with monuments that reflect Yokohama’s global ties.
- Rose Garden – A colorful photo spot in spring.
- Guardian of Water Statue – A gift from San Diego, Yokohama’s sister city.
- Memorial to Indian Soldiers – Honoring lives lost in the 1923 earthquake.
- Yokohama Bay Bridge Views – Perfect for watching ships enter and leave the harbor.
