The Umeda Sky Building combines futuristic architecture, thrilling glass elevators, and a sky-high observatory for one of Osaka’s most memorable city views.

A dramatic upward view of the Umeda Sky Building in Osaka, Japan, showcases its two tall towers connected by a futuristic circular observation deck with escalators and bridges, all set against a cloudy sky.

An Iconic Osaka Landmark

Soaring 173 meters above the city, the Umeda Sky Building is one of Osaka’s boldest architectural statements. Designed by Hiroshi Hara and completed in 1993, it looks like a giant upside-down “U,” with twin towers connected by a floating circular observatory.

What impressed us most wasn’t just the striking design, but how getting to the top feels like part of the adventure. The glass elevators glide skyward, and the see-through escalators suspended between towers make you feel like you’re stepping into the future.

Highlights of the Umeda Sky Building

A futuristic glass-covered escalator ascends through an arched tunnel with curved metal beams and soft blue lighting, leading toward a bright, illuminated area at the top of the iconic Umeda Sky Building.

Glass Elevator Ride

The excitement begins the moment you step into the see-through elevator. Shooting up to the 35th floor, you feel as if you’re floating vertically through the air. It’s a short ride, but one of the most memorable elevator trips we’ve had in Japan.

Suspended Escalators

From the 35th to the 39th floor, glass-tube escalators stretch between the towers. Surrounded by sky, it’s both thrilling and oddly calm.

Floating Garden Observatory (39F–40F)

A cityscape at sunset with the Umeda Sky Building in the foreground, a river running through the middle, and vibrant orange and pink clouds illuminating the sky above distant mountains.

At the top, the Floating Garden Observatory offers three unique ways to enjoy the view:

  • Indoor deck (39F): Air-conditioned, with wide windows and seating to take in the 360-degree panorama.
  • Cafe SKY 40: A long glass counter where sipping a drink feels like sitting in the clouds.
  • Open-air rooftop (40F): An outdoor platform with unobstructed views of Osaka. On a clear day, you can see the Yodo River, Mount Ikoma, and even the Kansai coastline.

Takimi Koji – A Retro Food Basement

After the observatory, we explored Takimi Koji in the basement. This underground dining area recreates the atmosphere of 1920s–30s Osaka, with narrow alleys, retro lanterns, and traditional eateries. We found ramen, kushikatsu, and izakaya-style dishes here—perfect for winding down after a sky-high adventure.
