Overview
Kamikochi is a highland valley in Nagano Prefecture, tucked inside Chubu Sangaku National Park. Often called Japan’s Yosemite, this mountain area features crystal-clear rivers, tall alpine peaks, and peaceful walking trails through lush forests. The Azusa River runs through the valley, offering stunning views year-round.
Cars aren’t allowed into Kamikochi, so visitors arrive by bus or taxi and walk in. The main trail is flat and easy to follow, making it great for families or first-time hikers. A loop from Kappa Bridge to Myojin Pond takes about 4–5 hours on foot, but many people spend the night to enjoy the stars and quiet morning air.
Kamikochi is open from mid-April to mid-November. It’s especially popular in October when fall colors light up the valley.
