In the middle of modern Toyama, Toyama Castle stands as a calm reminder of the city’s feudal past—set in a quiet park that’s perfect for unwinding.

A Castle Rooted in Toyama’s History
Toyama Castle (富山城) sits in the center of Toyama City, just a short walk from the station. While it’s a modern reconstruction, the site itself carries centuries of history. Originally built in 1543, the castle served as the stronghold of the Toyama branch of the Maeda clan during the Edo period.
The original structure was lost to fire and earthquakes over time, but the current keep—rebuilt in 1954 using concrete—remains faithful to the original design. With white plaster walls, tiled roofs, and a surrounding moat, the castle still reflects the classic architecture of Japan’s feudal era.
Inside the Toyama City Local History Museum

The castle is more than just an impressive structure. Inside, it houses the Toyama City Local History Museum, which shares the story of Toyama’s rise as a cultural and political center. The exhibits include samurai armor, weapons, artwork, and displays on local traditions.
We appreciated that most signs included English, which made the experience more engaging. The museum also highlights the unique role Toyama played as a center of medicine and crafts during the Edo period. It’s not a large museum, but it’s well-organized and worth visiting if you’re interested in local history.
The Castle Grounds and Park

Surrounding the castle is a public park with walking paths, open lawns, and seasonal flower displays. There’s even a small teahouse and pond near the moat.
Our family enjoyed strolling through the park, and the relaxed atmosphere and views of the castle made it a refreshing break from the rest of the city. You can visit without entering the castle if you just want to enjoy the scenery.
