Overview
Toyama City is a hidden gem nestled between the Sea of Japan and the Northern Japan Alps. While it’s a popular base for travelers exploring the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, the city itself offers plenty to discover—starting with the elegant Toyama Castle.
Set in a peaceful park near the city center, Toyama Castle is a beautifully reconstructed 16th-century fortress housing the Toyama City Local History Museum. It’s a lovely stop year-round, especially in spring when cherry blossoms surround the castle moat.
Outside the city, don’t miss the breathtaking Kurobe Gorge, known for its steep cliffs, turquoise river, and vibrant fall foliage. The open-air Torokko Train is the best way to experience this natural wonder.
Toyama City is easily accessible via the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo (approx. 2 hours) or Kanazawa (approx. 25 minutes). Once in Toyama, the castle is a 15–20 minute walk or a short tram ride from Toyama Station.
To reach Kurobe Gorge, take the Toyama Chiho Railway to Unazuki Onsen Station (about 2 hours from Toyama Station), then transfer to the Kurobe Gorge Railway’s Torokko Train.
