Overview
Tucked into the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, Shirakawa-go is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri (prayer-hands construction) farmhouses. These steep thatched-roof homes, built to withstand heavy snowfall, reflect centuries of rural Japanese life and craftsmanship.
Just over an hour by bus from Takayama or Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go is an easy day trip with scenic views along the way. Once there, cross the suspension bridge over the Shokawa River to enter a village frozen in time. Visit the observation deck for panoramic views, explore the thatched-roof homes, and stop by the Myozenji Temple Museum to learn more about local history and Buddhist culture.
While Shirakawa-go is beautiful year-round, winter is especially magical, with snow-covered rooftops and seasonal light-up events. Autumn also offers stunning foliage, though cherry blossoms are limited in this region.
Whether you’re drawn by the history, architecture, or alpine scenery, Shirakawa-go is one of Japan’s most unforgettable villages.
