Matsumoto

Overview

Nestled in the heart of Nagano Prefecture, Matsumoto is a welcoming city surrounded by the scenic Japanese Alps. Its crown jewel, Matsumoto Castle, is one of Japan’s oldest surviving castles, famous for its black exterior and elegant wooden interiors. Nearby Nakamachi Street offers a pleasant stroll past traditional white-walled kura buildings that now house cafés, sake shops, and artisan boutiques.

A short train ride away lies Lake Suwa, a peaceful resort area known for hot springs, waterfront walking paths, and views of the surrounding mountains. In winter, the lake sometimes freezes over, forming a rare natural phenomenon called omiwatari—ridge-like ice patterns that local legends link to the footsteps of gods. Visitors can also enjoy lake cruises, onsen towns like Kamisuwa, and the historic Suwa Taisha Shrine, one of Japan’s oldest.

Together, Matsumoto and Lake Suwa offer a perfect balance of history, relaxation, and natural beauty, making them ideal stops on a central Japan journey.
