Experience stunning views, traditional kaiseki meals, and legendary hot springs at Arima Grand Hotel, a serene retreat in one of Japan’s oldest onsen towns.

Why We Chose Arima Grand Hotel

With so many ryokan and hotels in Arima Onsen, picking the right one is never an easy task. We focused on properties known for excellent dining, scenic views, and easy access to both the hot spring town and Rokko Arima Ropeway. Arima Grand Hotel checked all the boxes—and it turned out to be even better than we imagined.

Set high on a hill just above the main town, the hotel offers a free shuttle from Arima Onsen Station and the town center. It also provides transportation to the nearby ropeway, which made sightseeing stress-free.

A Tranquil Washitsu Retreat

A traditional Japanese tatami room at Arima Grand Hotel with a low table, floor cushions, and two modern chairs near large windows with sheer curtains, offering a view of mountains outside.

We stayed in a standard washitsu (和室), a traditional Japanese-style room with tatami flooring. It featured a spacious tatami area used for sitting during the day and sleeping at night, along with a small seating area by the window for enjoying the view.

Dining – Kaiseki and Breakfast Highlights

A wooden tray at Arima Grand Hotel features five small dishes of Japanese cuisine—colorful assorted vegetables, gelatinous squares, a leaf-wrapped item—served with a small metal cup and wooden spoon.

One of the biggest highlights of our stay was the multi-course kaiseki dinner, served right in our room. This kind of in-room dining has become increasingly rare, as many ryokan now serve meals in shared dining halls due to staffing shortages. The meal featured local ingredients, beautifully seasonal presentation, and impeccable pacing.

Kaiseki Highlights

  • Fresh sashimi with mountain vegetables
  • Grilled seasonal fish
  • Steamed tofu and simmered vegetables
  • Local delicacies and a delicate dessert

If you’re booking a ryokan and unsure about the food quality, check the dining score on Japanese booking sites like JTB or Jalan. A high dining rating usually means you’re in for a great meal—it really makes a difference.

Breakfast Buffet

The breakfast buffet the next morning was equally impressive, with both Japanese and Western options.

  • Grilled fish, miso soup, and freshly steamed rice
  • Local tofu and pickled vegetables
  • Pastries, eggs, and pour-over coffee

We suggest arriving early at breakfast buffets at large hotels to enjoy the full spread without the crowds.

Soaking in the Kinsen and Ginsen Waters

The hot springs at Arima Grand Hotel include both of Arima’s famous mineral baths:

  • Kinsen (金泉) – a reddish-gold spring rich in iron
  • Ginsen (銀泉) – a clear, lightly carbonated silver spring

Onsen Facilities

  • Rooftop Open-Air Bath: Offers breathtaking views of the Rokko mountains. Best enjoyed at dawn or twilight.
  • Forest Bath: Located on a lower level, this bath feels like a secret garden, surrounded by trees and stone paths.
