Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is one of the largest aquariums in the world, where visitors can walk through spiraling tanks, marvel at whale sharks, and explore the Pacific’s diverse ecosystems.

When our kids were younger, one of their favorite places to visit was always the aquarium. Our son especially loved seeing all kinds of creatures. He would walk from tank to tank, trying to recognize each animal and proudly say their names. Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is one of the most accessible and complete aquariums in Japan. We have visited several times as a family, and each visit has been just as fun as the last.
The Pacific Ocean Tank – A Walk Around the Deep
The centerpiece of Kaiyukan is the massive Pacific Ocean tank, which is comparable in size to the largest aquariums we’ve visited (Monterey Aquarium and Okinawa).
- Size: 34 meters long and 9 meters tall
- Capacity: 5,400 tons of water
- Design: Surrounded by a spiraling walkway, allowing views from multiple depths
Instead of standing at a single viewing window, we descended floor by floor around the tank, watching different species from shifting angles. It felt like stepping deeper into the ocean with every turn.
The Star of the Show – The Whale Shark

The highlight of the Pacific Ocean tank is the whale shark.
- The largest fish in the world, yet it feeds mainly on plankton
- Cartilaginous like other sharks, so its skeleton is made of cartilage rather than bone
- Moves steadily and calmly through the water despite its enormous size
We watched as it glided past, sharing the tank with rays, tuna, and schools of fish that shimmered in unison. The acrylic windows, 30 cm thick, gave us a clear and close view of this gentle giant in motion.
Interactive and Thematic Exhibits Beyond the Tank

Touch Pool
On the lower level, our kids enjoyed an interactive pool where visitors can touch small sharks and rays. Their smooth, rubbery skin made it a favorite stop for kids and adults alike.
Antarctic Zone
This icy zone recreates a polar environment with penguins waddling and diving. The cold air and snow-like textures made it feel like stepping into another world.
Prehistoric Ocean
Older kids and science fans will appreciate this exhibit showcasing what ancient ocean creatures once looked like. Fossils and models of ammonites and trilobites gave us a fascinating look at long-extinct species.
Ecoregions of the Pacific Rim
Kaiyukan’s route highlights ecosystems around the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” We walked through themed tanks representing places like Monterey Bay’s kelp forests and Ecuador’s tropical rainforests. Each recreated habitat made us feel like we were traveling across the Pacific.
