Yamanaka Sushi offers a refined omakase experience with fresh seasonal seafood, skilled craftsmanship, warm hospitality, and all without leaving Hakata Station.

A Convenient Taste of Premium Sushi
One of the things we love about Japan is that even train stations can surprise you with incredible food. Yamanaka (やま中), tucked inside Fukuoka’s bustling Hakata Station, is a perfect example—a hidden gem where you can indulge in premium sushi without straying far from your travels.
Up on the 9th floor of Amu Plaza Hakata, this long-standing restaurant (with over 50 years of history!) offers a refined yet approachable omakase experience, showcasing fresh seafood from the nearby Genkai Sea.
We’ve enjoyed plenty of sushi meals across Japan, but Yamanaka impressed us with its balance of quality, presentation, and warm hospitality—all at a price that feels refreshingly accessible.
What Is Omakase?

Omakase (おまかせ) means “I’ll leave it up to you” in Japanese. In sushi dining, it’s an invitation to place your trust in the chef. At Yamanaka, you can share any preferences or allergies in advance, and the chef will curate a selection of seasonal nigiri and small plates just for you. Watching each piece being crafted adds to the experience as it feels like both a meal and a performance.
Why We Recommend Yamanaka Sushi

- Incredible value: Our lunch omakase was around ¥5,000, making it one of the best-value premium sushi experiences we’ve had.
- Outstanding quality: From buttery otoro to delicate uni, each piece was fresh and beautifully prepared.
- Warm hospitality: The chef not only demonstrated great skill but also took the time to chat and explain each sushi, making us feel welcome from start to finish.
If you’re unsure about committing to the full omakase, they also offer a la carte options, but we recommend going all in if you’re even a little adventurous.

Pro Tip: Reservations are highly recommended, especially for lunch hours and weekends.
Our Final Verdict on Yamanaka Sushi

Not every sushi restaurant in Japan manages to hit the perfect balance of quality, price, and comfort, so we like to highlight the ones that do.
Yamanaka checks all the boxes with its fresh ingredients, beautifully prepared omakase, and attentive service. Plus, being right inside Hakata Station makes it a convenient stop for travelers—or anyone craving top-notch sushi without going out of their way.
