Tamura Ginkatsu-tei near Gora Station is one of Hakone’s most beloved restaurants, serving its signature tofu katsu-ni set meal that draws visitors from all over.

A bowl of katsudon from Tamura Ginkatsu-tei, featuring breaded pork cutlet, onions, and egg cooked in savory broth, garnished with chopped green onions, served in a rustic clay pot on a wooden table.

Why Tamura Ginkatsu-tei Is Worth Visiting

When we think of memorable meals in Hakone, Tamura Ginkatsu-tei always comes to mind. Just a short walk from Gora Station, this family-run restaurant has earned a loyal following for its specialty, tofu katsu-ni (豆腐かつ煮). The dish combines a lightly battered tofu cutlet filled with seasoned ground pork, simmered in savory dashi broth, and served with rice and miso soup. It’s hearty, comforting, and unlike anything we’ve eaten elsewhere in Japan.

We visited during a holiday week and waited nearly an hour before being seated. The line moved steadily, and once we took our first bite, we agreed it was worth every minute. If you’re visiting on a weekend or holiday, expect a wait—but rest assured, it pays off.

Two Buildings, Two Menus

A cozy restaurant interior at Tamura Ginkatsu-tei features wooden beams and a lattice ceiling, wooden tables and chairs, warm lighting, and several people dining and conversing. Green plants decorate the walls for a welcoming touch.

The Old Wing (本館)

The original building is small, cozy, and serves a focused menu:

  • Tofu Katsu-ni Set Meal
  • Tofu Katsu-ni Gozen (includes seasonal vegetables, pickles, and chawanmushi)

We appreciated the quiet, traditional atmosphere here. If your main goal is to try the tofu katsu-ni without too many extras, this is the quicker and more authentic choice.

The New Wing (新館)

The newer building is larger and has a wider menu. Along with tofu katsu, it offers:

  • Oyakodon (chicken and egg rice bowl)
  • Ebi Fry (deep-fried shrimp)
  • Sashimi platters
  • Tonkatsu (pork cutlet)

This location is a good option for families or groups with varied tastes, though the wait here tends to be longer during peak lunch hours.

What We Loved About the Experience

At Tamura Ginkatsu-tei, enjoy a lacquered bento box with breaded pork cutlet topped with egg over rice, partially covered by a decorative lid, and served with miso soup on a green placemat.
  • The tofu katsu struck the perfect balance, with a crispy coating that soaked up the savory dashi while the inside stayed soft, juicy, and flavorful.
  • The dashi broth was rich with umami and especially satisfying after a morning walk in nearby Gora Park.
  • Staff were kind and efficient, even while handling a busy crowd.
  • Portion sizes were generous, and prices felt fair for the quality and care put into each dish.
