First Impressions of Hakone-en
We’ve stopped at Hakone-en several times with our kids, and it always feels like a low-stress place to enjoy Lake Ashi. Located right by the water, it has just the right mix of small attractions, food options, and open space. On sunny days, we’ve lingered here longer than planned, letting the kids play while we admired the scenery.
Things to Do at Hakone-en
Hakone-en Aquarium (箱根園水族館)
The aquarium isn’t large, but it’s perfect for younger children. It features both freshwater and saltwater sections, and the penguin exhibit is always a highlight. Our daughter loved watching them waddle around when she was little, and it’s still a sweet memory for us.
Petting Zoo
Next to the aquarium is a small petting zoo where toddlers and younger kids can interact with animals up close. It’s simple, but a fun addition for families traveling with small children.
Komagatake Ropeway (駒ヶ岳ロープウェイ)
Hakone-en is also the departure point for the Komagatake Ropeway. The ride takes you to the summit of Mount Komagatake, where you can see Lake Ashi and Mt. Fuji on clear days. There’s also a small shrine at the top. If you’re already riding the Hakone Ropeway elsewhere, the views may feel similar, but this one is quieter and less crowded.
Ryuguden Ryokan (龍宮殿)
Along the lakeshore, you’ll notice a grand building with sweeping tiled roofs. This is Ryuguden, a luxurious ryokan in traditional Japanese style. Even if you’re not staying there, it’s worth admiring its design. For those considering an onsen stay, this ryokan is a good option.
Where to Eat Near Hakone-en
Casual restaurants around Hakone-en serve Japanese set meals, curry rice, and udon. It’s an easy place to have lunch before continuing a Lake Ashi cruise or sightseeing around Hakone.

Hakone-en sits on the eastern shore of Lake Ashi and is easy to reach by public transport or car.
By Bus
- Odakyu Hakone Highway Bus from Togendai Station; Hakone-en is one of the first stops and is covered by the Hakone Freepass.
- From Hakone-Yumoto Station, take a bus bound for Hakone-en or Moto-Hakone and get off at Hakone-en.
By Train + Ropeway
- From Odawara or Gora, ride the Hakone Tozan Railway and Hakone Ropeway to Togendai, then transfer to the bus for Hakone-en.
By Car
- On-site paid parking is available; allow extra time for mountain traffic on weekends and holidays.
