Shikisai no Oka in Biei is one of Hokkaido’s most photogenic flower gardens, with rolling fields of seasonal blooms, fun rides, and even alpacas.

A Hill of Colors in Biei

Shikisai no Oka spans over 37 acres of flower fields that bloom from spring through autumn. Instead of showcasing just one type of flower, the farm plants many varieties side by side, creating bold stripes of lavender, poppies, marigolds, salvia, and lupines that flow across the hills. The effect is like walking through a giant painting.

We visited in mid-July, right at the peak of bloom. The colors were dazzling against Biei’s wide, blue skies, and every turn felt like a perfect photo moment.

Exploring the Flower Fields

The fields are large, but exploring them is part of the fun. Walking paths wind through the flowers, and there are also transportation options for families:

Entry to Shikisai no Oka is free, but donations are encouraged. During busy flower seasons, there may be a small admission fee. It’s best to check the official website before your visit.

Meeting the Alpacas

Our kids’ favorite part of Shikisai no Oka wasn’t the flowers, but the alpacas. The farm has a small alpaca enclosure where visitors can pet and feed them. These fluffy animals are gentle and photogenic, and we couldn’t resist snapping pictures while our kids laughed and fed them.

How to Get to Shikisai no Oka

Shikisai no Oka sits just outside Biei in central Hokkaido. It pairs well with nearby Furano flower spots.

By Train and Bike

From JR Biei Station, it is about a 12-minute taxi ride or a 30-minute bike ride. Taxis and rental bicycles are available at the station.

By Car

From Furano, drive 25 to 30 minutes. From Asahikawa, plan 45 to 60 minutes. Free on site parking is available.
