Why Visit the Sapporo TV Tower?

Completed in 1957, the Sapporo TV Tower may not be Japan’s tallest or flashiest, but it has become a beloved local landmark. Painted in bright red and white, it is both a viewing spot and a helpful orientation point in the middle of Sapporo.

From the top, you can see Odori Park stretch out like a ribbon across the city, with Mount Okura and Mount Moiwa visible in the distance on clear days. The tower also adds character to Sapporo’s skyline and has a nostalgic charm that locals and visitors appreciate.

We found it especially handy for navigating the city. Sapporo’s street system is laid out in a grid, and the tower serves as a natural wayfinder. If you ever get disoriented, you can simply look up to spot it.

The Observation Deck

An elevator takes visitors up to the observation deck, about 90 meters above ground. From here, you can take in views of downtown Sapporo and beyond—an ideal spot for first-time visitors to get their bearings.

The tower is open year-round, and during winter, extended evening hours allow visitors to see the city’s famous illumination displays from above.

At the base, there’s also a souvenir shop and seasonal events, so it’s an easy and enjoyable stop even with kids.
