Farm Tomita is one of Hokkaido’s most beloved flower farms, where rolling lavender fields and colorful blossoms create a breathtaking summer landscape.

Colorful rows of blooming flowers, including purple, white, yellow, and pink, blanket the hillside at Farm Tomita, with a small town, trees, and distant mountains in the background under a cloudy sky.

What to Expect at Farm Tomita

Farm Tomita is the most famous lavender farm in Hokkaido and a highlight of Furano’s summer season. The farm first gained attention in the 1970s when tourism to the area began to flourish. Today, it has grown into a full-scale attraction with flower fields, cafes, shops, museums, and workshops dedicated to lavender and other seasonal flowers.

Flower Fields Across the Hills

A man stands smiling between two children in front of a large lavender field at Farm Tomita, with tall green trees in the background under a bright, clear sky.

The farm has more than 13 fields, each blooming with a mix of flowers during summer. Lavender is the star, but you’ll also see marigolds, salvia, poppies, and baby’s breath depending on the time of year.

Our favorite was the Irodori Field. From the hillside, rows of seven different flowers stretch across the slope like colorful ribbons. Standing there felt like being inside a living painting.

Best time to visit: Lavender reaches peak bloom from mid-June to mid-July. Early June offers a mix of lavender buds and other seasonal flowers, while late July often sees the lavender harvested.

Lavender Goods, Ice Cream, and More

A cup of lavender-colored soft serve ice cream from Farm Tomita with a wooden spoon sits on a table, with a blurred lavender field and people in the background. The cup features a delicate floral lavender design.

Farm Tomita is just as popular for its lavender-inspired goods as it is for the flowers.

  • Lavender soft cream: We tried this unique ice cream, and it was lightly sweet with a floral aroma.
  • Scented gifts: Shops sell soaps, candles, sachets, essential oils, and potpourri made from the farm’s lavender.
  • Farm products: The onsite distillery and perfume workshop show how lavender is processed into cosmetics and fragrances. There’s also a dried flower exhibition and a small art gallery.

Dining at the Farm

Visitors gather outside and enter Farm Tomita, a rustic wooden building with a Japanese sign on the deck, surrounded by lush greenery on a cloudy day.

Several cafes offer light meals, coffee, and desserts with views of the fields. We recommend stopping at one of the outdoor cafes for lunch and saving room for ice cream afterward. Other flavors besides lavender are available for anyone looking for something more familiar.
