Experience the peaceful beauty of Kinrin Lake, Yufuin’s most iconic natural landmark, known for its magical morning mist and tranquil lakeside walks.

A Tranquil Morning at Kinrin Lake
Located at the base of Mount Yufu, Kinrin Lake is one of Yufuin’s most well-known spots. After walking down Yunotsubo Kaido, we followed the path toward the lake, enjoying the relaxed pace and small-town scenery along the way.
It took about 30 minutes to walk from Yufuin Station. The route passed cafes, trees, and quiet shops.
What Makes Kinrin Lake So Unique?

Kinrin Lake is fed by both hot and cold underground springs. This rare combination creates a layer of mist that rises from the surface, especially on cool mornings in fall and winter.
Its name means “Golden Scale Lake,” inspired by shimmering fish seen in the glowing sunset light. A small shrine called Tensho Shrine sits quietly at the lake’s southern edge, adding a sense of calm to the surroundings.
Things to Do Around Kinrin Lake
- Stroll along the water’s edge – The flat walking path around the lake is quiet and easy. We enjoyed stopping at different points to take in the scenery and watch the reflections in the still water.
- Take a boat ride – Small boats are sometimes available for rental. It’s a calm way to see the lake up close, especially if the morning mist is still lingering.
- Relax in a lakeside onsen – Several places near the lake offer day-use hot spring baths with lake views.
- Visit the Marc Chagall Museum – Next to the lake is a small art museum featuring works by Marc Chagall.
A Peaceful Afternoon in Yufuin

Even without the mist, Kinrin Lake has a quiet magic. We spent a while just walking and then found a cozy cafe nearby to grab snacks with a view of the lake. The calm atmosphere made us want to slow down and simply enjoy the moment.
Later that day, we continued our artistic adventure with a pottery session at Touki Studio, a workshop where we got to make our own clay bowls. It was a creative, hands-on activity that made our time in Yufuin feel even more special.
