From late-night parfaits to rich nama chocolate and creamy Hokkaido ice cream, Sapporo’s sweets scene blends local ingredients with artistry for unforgettable desserts.

Why Sapporo is a Dessert Lover’s Paradise
Sapporo is one of Japan’s great food capitals, and its sweet side is every bit as famous as its savory dishes. With world-class Hokkaido dairy, fresh fruit, and a tradition of both Japanese and Western desserts, the city is a dream destination for anyone with a sweet tooth.
We set out to explore Sapporo’s dessert culture and found it every bit as indulgent as promised. From parfaits to cheese tarts, it turned into a tasting adventure that kept us smiling (and very full) at every stop.
What Makes Sapporo Sweets Special

While Tokyo is known for its experimental desserts and Kyoto for its elegant wagashi, Sapporo strikes a perfect middle ground between creativity and craftsmanship. The secret? Hokkaido’s unbeatable milk, cream, and cheese.
Popular sweets to try in Sapporo include:
- Baked cheese tarts filled with rich cream cheese
- Nama chocolate (fresh ganache-style chocolate)
- Soft-serve ice cream and gelato
- Elaborate parfaits, often enjoyed as late-night treats
Parfaits in Sapporo

Parfaits have become something of a cultural phenomenon here, with specialty shops staying open late into the night. We visited the well-known Parfait, coffee, liquor, Sato—yes, that is the full name.
Here’s why it has such a cult following:
- Artistry: Each parfait is layered with textures, flavors, and colors that look like edible sculptures.
- Flavors: We tried one with sea salt and caramel, and another with ume (plum) and sweet beans. Both were so unique and delicious.
- Pairings: They even have coffee, tea, and alcohol pairings matched to each parfait.
We came for dessert but stayed for the atmosphere, and couldn’t resist ordering more “for research.”
Ice Cream You Can’t Miss

Hokkaido’s dairy is among the best in Japan, and Sapporo’s ice cream reflects that. Creamy, fresh, and never overly sweet, soft-serve cones are easy to find in shopping streets, cafés, and even convenience stores.
To end our dessert tour, we tried a nama chocolate soft-serve. It was rich, smooth, and intensely chocolatey—perhaps our favorite bite of the trip.
Where to Find the Best Sweets

- Parfait, coffee, liquor, Sato – Central Sapporo, near Susukino. Expect a wait in the evenings, as late-night parfaits are a local tradition.
- Kinotoya Bake – Famous for baked cheese tarts.
- LeTAO – Known for cakes and silky nama chocolate, with branches in the city.
Is Sapporo’s Sweets Scene Worth Trying?
Sapporo is one of the best cities in Japan for dairy-based sweets, and the creativity and ingredient quality are second to none. Whether you love parfaits, ice cream, or chocolate, you’ll find something special here.
Our family dessert adventure left us full and impressed. Sapporo proves that dessert deserves its own place on your itinerary.
