Yamaguchi Prefecture

Overview

Located in western Japan at the tip of Honshu, Yamaguchi Prefecture blends coastal scenery, historic towns, and easy day trips. The prefecture’s largest city, Shimonoseki, is known for its seafood culture and waterfront atmosphere, while Iwakuni and Hagi offer classic castle-town charm and well-preserved streetscapes. With fewer crowds than many major destinations, Yamaguchi makes a relaxed base for exploring the region.

Top highlights include Kintaikyo Bridge in Iwakuni, a famous multi-arch wooden bridge and one of Japan’s most photogenic landmarks. Nature lovers can head to Akiyoshidai, a vast karst plateau, and explore the impressive limestone caverns of Akiyoshido Cave. In Yamaguchi City, Rurikoji Temple’s five-story pagoda is a standout cultural site, especially during seasonal foliage and evening illuminations when available.

Along the coast, visitors can enjoy sweeping ocean views and scenic drives, including Tsunoshima Bridge, one of Japan’s most striking coastal bridges. Local food is another reason to visit, with specialties like kawara soba and seasonal fugu reflecting the area’s strong culinary identity.
