Ride the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway for sweeping views of Lake Kawaguchi and Japan’s most famous mountain, with easy access to trails and family-friendly activities.

What Is the Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway?
The Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway is a short but steep cable car ride that climbs 400 meters up Mt. Tenjo (天上山). In just a few minutes minutes, it connects the lakeside base station near Kawaguchiko Station to an observation deck with breathtaking views.
From the top, we could see Lake Kawaguchi spread out below and Mt. Fuji rising ahead. On clear mornings, the view is one of the best in Japan.
Hiking Options and Scenic Trails

For a more active visit, you can hike instead of taking the ropeway. The descent takes about 40 minutes.
The trail is well-marked and moderately steep, but manageable for beginners with good shoes.
Bonus Hike to a Hidden Shrine
About 20 minutes past the observation deck, we found the small Komitake Shrine. It was quiet and added a cultural touch to the hike.
Trail to Mt. Mitsutoge
From the summit station, you can also connect to Mt. Mitsutoge (三ッ峠山), known for its panoramic day hikes. The trails here offer some of the best views of Mt. Fuji with fewer crowds.
Ropeways in Japan

We’ve ridden several ropeways across Japan, but this one felt the most special for its combination of easy access and unforgettable Fuji views. The ride itself is short, yet the payoff at the summit is huge.
How to Get to Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway
Train
Ride the Fujikyuko Line to Kawaguchiko Station. Walk about 10 minutes to the base station along the lakeshore.
Bus
Take a highway bus from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko Station. Follow signs for the ropeway and walk along the lake.
By Car
The drive from central Tokyo takes 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic.
Pro Tip: Arrive early for the clearest Mt. Fuji views before midday clouds gather.
